Chocolate Covered Football Recipes

By Steve Campbell

Communal eating and drinking is probably at the very top of that list of common activates while watching football. From the FIFA World Cup to the local domestic cup final, it is obligatory for dedicated followers to spend time watching their much loved teams on television. So, stop thinking about the usual pizzas and fried chicken and consider being completely different and try chocolate covered recipes. Besides, chocolates have their share of health advantages the whole family and friends are likely to benefit from.

A key health compound in dark chocolate is flavonoids that have antioxidant properties that help guard cell injury from free radicals. Dark chocolate is abundant in this compound and this gives it the standing of being a health food benefit. However, other foods also have flavonoids e.g. red wine, onions, apples, tea, peanuts and cranberries.

And do not believe that these chocolate treats are for the kids only as the grownups at your football party will also be fighting for their chance to score a few of these treats as well.

Following the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, let's consider a simple start with The South African Smoothie, blending together 40ml Amarula cream liqueur, with a small banana, chocolate ice cream and chocolate shavings to garnish.

If you are feeling more adventurous consider The African Chocolate Gateau:

Ingredients:

*A bar of good very dark rum flavoured Chocolate *2 tablespoons of (unsalted) butter *2 tablespoons of (maple) syrup *3 heaped tablespoons of hot chocolate powder *A packet (1 lb or more) orange flavoured cookies, crushed *1 cup of raisins *1 cup of chopped almonds (or other nuts) *1 cup of chopped cherries *A generous shot of chilled Amarula liqueur

First of all, melt the chocolate and let it cool prior to mixing it with the soft butter. Add all the other ingredients and then add about two ounces of the Amarula. Put the mixture in a lightly greased and dusted non stick tin and cover with wax paper. Then place it in the freezer for a few hours.

For the rest of the Amarula, add some ice cubes, put up your feet and dream of your team winning the Cup before enjoying your chocolate covered recipes.

Whenever you are ready, remove the frozen "cake" from the bread tin. Slice it with a hot knife and serve each slice topped with some berries and whipped cream. And as a finishing touch, top each slice with a little splash of Amarula.
